About Us
High Lonesome Therapeutic Equestrian Center is a nonprofit organization and Cherokee County's first therapeutic riding facility. Our mission is to support the growth and healing of the mind, body, and spirit of individuals with varying abilities in a therapeutic environment through a partnership with equines.Therapeutic riding adapts horseback riding to the needs of individuals with disabilities so they can experience the physical, cognitive, and emotional benefits of riding. The synchronized movement of the horse and rider is used as a therapeutic tool to improve the strength, balance, coordination, and self-confidence. Instructors, volunteers, and specifically trained horses and ponies work as a team to assist the rider to gain these benefits of horseback riding. We are a Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship Intl (PATH Intl.) member center. Our Executive Director and Instructor is a Registered Nurse, Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructor, and Equine Specialist in Mental Health and Learning through PATH Intl. With the assistance of volunteers, we are able to keep our riders and horses happy and safe. High Lonesome also provides beginner horseback riding lessons to able bodied riders interested in learning horsemanship and riding skills.
